Balinese Temples (Discover Indonesia Series)
Published in Hardcover by Periplus Editions (January, 2000)
Authors: Julian Davison and Bruce Granquist
Average review score:

Substantial Introduction to Balinese Temples
This small and inexpensive book packs with it a tremendous amount of information about Balinese Temples. The author starts by introducing the concept of Hinduism and Buddhism in Bali, as well as religious life in this island east of Java. He then proceeds to discuss general elements of the temples, such as: structures, functions, styles, and types. Along the way, he packs in many examples of those elements (in text and in images), and explains well each new terms that the readers encounter.

The illustrations are well thought of and done. The lay-out of the book assists the readers in navigating through the sea of information. Captions, side-bars and placement of graphics work very well. One thing that is missing from this book is the floor plan(s) of the temples. While this book does not profess to be an in-depth study on architecture, it will be useful to include simple floor-plan(s).

Almost toward the end, the author puts in a chapter on the kingdom of Majapahit of East Java, the influence of which is apparent in Balinese art and architecture. Somehow I wonder if this chapter would be better off placed toward the beginning of the book, since it would better explain the spread of the religion, as well as the style of architecture from Java, Bali's neighboring island.

This book is part of a series in Periplus' "Discover Indonesia." Check out the two other titles already available at Amazon.com: Balinese Architecture (ISBN 962-593-194-5,) by Davison and Granquist (the same team that writes the Balinese Temples), and The Mysteries of Borobudur (ISBN 962-593-198-8) by Miksic, Marcello and Trachini.

Great Book
I have found this book one I return to periodically, and cannot put it down. This true story of Jacqui's experience, how she was given a death sentence because of malignant melanoma, and then reversed it, is very powerful and gives a day-by-day step-by-step guide to her journey and how she got there.

This will be my second copy, as I wore out the first one.

Read it if you care about yourself, and for your loved ones.

The Fading Smile: Poets in Boston from Robert Lowell to Sylvia Plath
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (March, 1996)
Author: Peter Davison
Average review score:

The Low-Down on the High-Toned Poets of the Boston Fifties
In this juicy, lively memoir of the Boston poetry scene in the 1950's, Davison dishes the dirt not only on himself but also on such luminaries as Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and Robert Frost. The decade of the 1950's was a time of delirious creativity for these poets perched on the threshold of fame and notoriety, and at the center of the vortex sat Robert Lowell, brilliant teacher, mentor and model of the wounded artist. Davison's group portrait shows men dominating these mythologized poetic years with the women cajoling, wheedling and flirting to be noticed, and then, once they had the men's attention, stepping forward with fierce work to be taken seriously. As readers will see, Plath and Sexton were up to any challenge and left behind for posterity both their great works and tales of their wild vamping exploits. Although Davison makes no secret that everybody in the group drank like fish and acted out with impunity, he ultimately celebrates those years as the apex of his social and creative life, a time populated by people of immense charisma and talent. The book is simply a love letter to the difficult geniuses of one of the great moments in 20th century American literary history.

Friends in High Places

Revelations of Big Corporations, Many Secrets They Hide
In this book, Friends in High Places, I give the author many
praises. Layton McCartney has really captured the truth of big corporations, especially this one. Knowing the company as I do, he took on a dangerous assignment to write this book as I am sure he knows after his many revelations.Read this book.
If you are considering going to work for this company, be sure
you know who they are. They pay very well, as long as you can
work very hard for them, doing whatever you are assigned to do. They give you a chance to 'see the world'. Always keep your eyes and ears open, and keep a daily diary. Things are sometimes not
what you think they are. Pay particular attention to incidents
and accidents revealed within this book. Many were not revealed.
What I learned from this book was truly an eye opener to me as
I always had such a high regard for it before I learned better, too late. So many events, and they were startling. This is truly
a descriptive evidence of happenings within the company.

The God of Mirrors
Published in Hardcover by Atlantic Monthly Press (February, 1986)
Authors: Robert Reilly, Atlantic, and Peter Davison
Average review score:

A Wilde Life
This book is a beautifully written, purple-prosed account of Oscar Wilde's life from the height of his fame as an aesthete to his tragic death in a seedy Paris hotel. Reilly has succeeded in capturing the style of Wilde in his speaking and in the book's descriptive passages, and his writing gives life to people like Constance (Wilde's wife), Robbie Ross, and Bosie, and their lives seperate from Oscar are shown in interesting detail. Each character is given real depth and motivation. I normally do not like "Fictionalized Biographies," but this one is moving and well-written.
